The cape Tripiti the beautiful Island of Gavdos is the southernmost tip of the continent. In ancient times there were only villages and temples. The author Callimachus of the third century B.C said that there lived the nymph Calypso, who, according to Homer, captured Odysseus for six years. In the old days the Islanders suggested that the cave was the home of Calypso. However, nowadays the cave is covered by sand. Gavdos offers a passageway for several boats, and finds many shipwrecks on the coast today and in the past. There, according to tradition, foundered 99 fathers and the natural harbor of the Island was the place in 64 AD grounded the ship carrying the apostle Paul in Rome for trial. In the era of Venetian rule the Island was the target and the base of Saracen pirates. Gavdos is 10 km in length, 5km wide and covers an area of 30 square kilometers and the highest point is 384 m. Today the Island has about 70 residents, whereas in the old days there were 400. The Island consists of 5 small neighborhoods (Kastri Votsiana, Vines, Xenakis, Karabes) which can be accessed by a road, Karabes is the only village with a harbor. The West coast of the Island is characterized by great cliffs and has been designated as a protected area Natura 2000. The North and East side of the Island has beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. Gavdos is located approximately 22 nautical miles from Crete and during the summer months there are regular buses and boats leaving Sfakia and Paleochora. Gavdos is famous for its fine meats, fresh fish and good wine. On the Island, visitors can find apartments, campsites and restaurants.
