Koutalis Beach in Apokoronas, Chania, Crete

The beach Koutalas or Koutalis is located in Kokkino Chorio of the municipality of Apokoronas, at the tip of the cape Drapanos, which is about 27 km east of the city of Chania. The beach has no facilities, it is relatively undiscovered and it receives few visitors, mainly due to its rocky seabed. However, the waters are crystal clear and shallow and you can spread your towel and enjoy the sunbath on this sandy beach. To get here you have to follow the road until the village of Kokkino Chorio. From the village starts a narrow road that directs to the tip of the cape. After 800 m on this road you will see, on your left, an intersection and the road that ends at the beach. There are no signs, so, if you don't have a GPS device, then the safest way to reach there is by asking someone local from the village.

After the beach, don't forget to take a walk to the lighthouse at the tip of the cape, which was built in 1864. Kokkino Chorio is also known for its caves, some of which are easy to visit. The most famous of these is the submarine "Elephant Cave" which is a great diving destination. In Kokkino Chorio you will also find traditional taverns, cafés and a glass factory with handmade artwork. Nearby there are several other beautiful and popular sandy beaches with facilities, such as Kalives, Almyrida and Georgioupolis.
