The beach of Agia Marina is located 8 km west of Chania and continues for another 2.5 km. It has clear shallow waters and golden sand all along the coast line. If you don't want the hustle and bustle of crowded beaches, then Agia Marina is not for you. The beach is well organised with sun beds, umbrellas and countless beach bars and restaurants. During the summer months all the youth of Chania and beyond, come here to relax and have their afternoon coffee. Here you will see many beautiful people with physically fit bodies playing rackets in their branded swimwear. From late July to mid August sun beds are scarce, as this is when the Greeks have their summer vacation. So, you have to get your sun bed early and it is advisable not to sit too near the front, so that you are not disturbed by the countless tennis balls flying overhead. In any case, this beach caters for all tastes and with a short walk you can easily find a quieter spot.
Agia Marina is well known for its water sports, including parasailing, Jet Ski, private boat hire, glass bottom boat trips or just the simple and easy pedalo. It is worth it to take a boat trip to the nearby island of Thodorou, although it is prohibited to walk on the Island as it is a sanctuary for the Kri Kri which is a protected species of mountain goat. However, on the 8th of June every year the locals celebrate at a little church situated on the island, so this is your only opportunity to get there and join in the celebration. In any case, if you are not interested in sea sports and excursions, then you can just settle for a refreshing mojito on the beach.
