The beach of Orthi Ammos near Frangokastello, Sfakia, Chania

The beach of Orthi Ammos is located 80 km southeast of Chania. The name Orthi Ammos (upright sand) was taken after the sand dunes that stand several meters high by the shore. The much more popular beach of Frangokastelo is located just 1 km west and it is certainly worth a visit to walk into its well preserved castle and learn about its rich history. The beach is not organized, so if you intend to stay long then you should better have an umbrella with you. Before you take the path down to the beach you will meet some traditional taverns from where you may get water or a snack, though what we definitely recommend you is to try out their fresh fish along with some local delicacies. The eastern side of Orthi Ammos is preferred by naturists and, if you are ok with that then it doesn't really matter where you will go, as the whole beach has shallow clear waters and fine sand. This is an excellent choice for those who get to Frangokastelo but want to avoid crowds on a busy tourist day.
