HISTORIC RESIDENCE WITH MANY TRADITIONAL FEATURES
This beautiful two-storey stone house dates from the period of Ottoman rule in Crete. It was fully restored and upgraded in 1990, with the addition of two modern bathrooms (one on each floor), new plumbing and electrical installations, oil-fired central heating, and other infrastructure upgrades.
The renovation was carried out with respect for the building's original character, preserving many of its historic architectural features. Throughout the house are carved stone arches, a traditional Ottoman fireplace, built-in wall niches once used for storing water jars and food, and numerous original stone decorative and structural elements. A large section of the ground floor retains its original stone slab flooring. The intermediate floor structure incorporates timber reclaimed from the deck of a French ocean liner, chosen for its exceptional durability. Furniture is not included in the sale price but is available by separate negotiation, and several pieces are antiques.
The front of the property faces the main street of the village. The house entrance is framed by a stone arch, reflecting the building's former commercial uses, which included a café, grocery shop, and butcher's shop. The original wide shop opening has since been replaced by a standard entrance door, with windows added on either side to provide natural light while maintaining privacy through frosted glass.
The entrance opens into a reception/sitting room featuring the original fireplace. This space is also large enough to accommodate a home office. Beyond it is a versatile central room that can serve as a dining room, living area, guest accommodation, or another purpose depending on the owner's needs. It is currently arranged as a bedroom with two built-in stone beds, each incorporating storage beneath. Further inside is the property's distinctive kitchen, followed by the ground-floor bathroom. Both the central room and the kitchen have direct access to the rear courtyard, where an external staircase leads to the upper floor.
Upstairs, a small landing leads to the bedroom and the second bathroom. There are two balconies of similar size, facing east and west. The west-facing rear balcony enjoys views towards the peaks of the White Mountains, while the east-facing front balcony includes a large covered seating area overlooking the village.
Despite the constraints typical of a historic building, the house offers practical living spaces and can be reconfigured to create two comfortable bedrooms. In its current layout, the front room could also accommodate a small retail business, studio, or exhibition space.
The village is active throughout the year and has established tourist appeal. It provides a convenient base for exploring the Apokoronas region and its traditional villages and is situated roughly midway between Chania and Rethymno, with Rethymno approximately a 40-minute drive away. Within the village are traditional narrow streets, guesthouses, a mini market, cafés, and tavernas. The nearby towns of Kalyves and Vamos, both around 10 minutes by car, offer supermarkets, pharmacies, banks, and a wider range of shops and services. Chania International Airport is approximately 45 minutes away by car.
