Potamos is often considered the most beautiful beach on Gavdos, located at the mouth of a stream on the island's northwest coast. This serene spot features a wide, golden sandy beach stretching about 600 meters. It remains relatively uncrowded, allowing you to enjoy the stunning scenery in solitude.
Accessing Potamos can be challenging, as it requires a 2.5-kilometer hike down a path starting from the village of Ampelos, where you can leave your vehicle. The trail is well-marked, but the return hike, which is uphill with few trees and an elevation gain of about 300 meters, can be demanding. Be sure to bring plenty of water along with your essentials. Along the way, you'll be treated to panoramic views of Gavdopoula Island, secluded cliffs, and a pine forest that extends to the coast, offering a bird’s-eye view of Potamos beach.
Due to its orientation, the beach often experiences waves, but its shallow waters and the protective cove provide a relatively sheltered environment. A few meters behind the beach, cedars offer shade, and you might encounter some of the island’s "hermits," who live in harmony with nature year-round.
